Edmonton vs. Clarke Long XI

Report by: Alan Porter

Cricket week got under way with the sun shining and a match against a Clarke long X1 It was decided to play a 40 over game and d sans went out to toss up with instructions from skipper Paul Cooke to win the toss, this he failed to do and the Es were asked to bat first. D Sans and L Perraira opened the innings with a couple of lusty blows before David was caught by S KEER and bowled by TOP GROUNDSMAN Brent Rickard. Brent continued to bowl and his next wicket was Mr Perrera who was caught by P Turner( ping).

With Clarke bowling well at the pavillion end runs were hard to come by and after 20 overs the score was just over 50 and a low score seemed on the cards but as wickets fell in came Andrew Cooper and with some grit and little luck dispatched the ball to all parts on the way to a well earned fifty and this enabled the home side to finish ther innings on 214 off 40overs.

With a target of just over 5 an over Clarkes X1 opened with T Willet and P Langdell and with first team skipper Tony Willet timing the ball well 40 came off the first 5 overs and the 214 set by the Es seemed to be well short of a competetive target but Tony then mis-timed a straight hit and was caught by G Mardell in the deep. This brought in two guest players who were quickly sent back to the hutch with P Turner going for 2 and Steve Keer going for agolden duck. As a break through by the Es had been made, the run rate began to increase to just over 6 an over with some of the better players getting out chasing runs.

Stalwart of the football section E Rowerth who only plays in a couple of games a season began to make the Es bowlers look preety ordinary and with not a little skill helped himself to an excellant 50 and with C Long pacing the innigs well until being bowled by C Dodds with 5 balls left and 5 runs required it was left to D Hare and G Dickinson to seure an exciting victory with the final 2 runs coming off the last ball in the evening sunshine and after an excellant afternoons cricket everyone retired to the bar for a well earned drink and a good evenings chat. Lets hope the weather stays fine and more good cricket is played for the coming week.

Edmonton vs. Presidents XI

Report by: Alan Porter

With the weather continuing fine skippers TONY WILLET and MICKEY SMYTH took the field to toss the coin for the first match for the JIM CORDELL SHIELD .The shield being in memory of JIM who collapsed and died during last years PRESIDENTS game. With the Presidents team made up of a couple of guests and the u17s from a couple of seasons ago they put Edmonton into bat. With 7 first X1 players Es had a strong side but with acombination of some poor shot selection and some good bowling the Es were quickly reduced to 70 odd for 6 wickets and an easy win for the presidents X1 looked on the cards but this brought 1stX1 skipper T Willet to the crease and with a class innings of 88 showed how good the skipper can be especially when playing under pressure from some good bowling from T Miller and co with able assistance from MATT WORTON who made a responsible 42 the Es were to recover to 248-9 after 45overs.

The presidents X1 began there innings with D HINNIGAN and T Miller opening and both batsmen looked comfortable against a 1s attack of Worton and Street and they were keeping up with the run rate until Tom Miller tried to pull J Street and was caught behind by Billson, this opened the gates and the presidentsX1 being in the same plight as the Es were on 72-6 but an excellant 50 from J Stevenson restored the game to an aire of respectability the presidents X1 were all in the last over for just over 180 .With TONY WIILLET the M.O.M for the Es and JON STEVENSON recieving the same for the presidents X1 for which both players received a trophy. The champagne moment was an excellant catch by JOHN HINNIGAN diving to give Matt Worton a wicket.

Edmonton vs. Cheshunt Thursday

Report by: Alan Porter

The fourth game of the week got under way against Cheshunt Thursday even though it was a little late in starting with Cheshunt players arriving late so play did not get under way until 2-45 with a 45 over game which would incur a late finish.

The Es batted first with N Waker and D Hinnigan opening the batting with Nick going first going for a big shot and being caught this brought Daniel Hare to the wicket and he despatched his 3rd ball for 4 with an excellant pull shot. Dave and Daniel batted well and the score began to move along nicely with Daniel being bowled by the spinner after a well constucted innings, this brought D Stevenson to the wicket and with David it is all or nothing but this time he played a sensible innings and when Dave Hinnigan went lbw with another 50 under his belt D S tevenson was joined by Daniel Bilson and he again scored an excellant 33 and with DS playing sensibly for an excellant 61 the Es managed 218 off 45 overs.

Cheshunt started there innings well with 2 good opening batsmen and with J Kenway going for a few in his first two overs 218 looked as though theEs score would not be enough but with the introduction of P Cooper the run rate slowed and so did the over rate but he did manage to get one of the opehers out before going off suffering from an unidentified injury but this did not stop him from bowling in the nets and aquick game of football.

C Dodds took over the bowling at the J Street end and wickets began to tumble and Cheshunt began to fall further behind the run rate and with 20 overs left they still required over a hundred and with the Es keeping the bowling tight even a appeal against the light with two balls left could not stave off Cheshunts first defeat by the Es.

With two wins and a defeat this years cricket is proving tob entertaining and succesful.
